The Wearer

Long Live McQueen

This morning brought some sad news to the fashion world.  Alexander McQueen had taken his own life at the age of 40.  In homage to McQueen my ensemble for today was inspired by his Fall 2008 RTW collection.

I actually remember thinking about this specific collection the day I bought this lacy doily skirt I’m wearing.  I layered it beneath a black cotton sundress and pinned a piece of the dress up like a little bustle, so the lace would be more visible.  Ballet flats and tights were required as well.  The inspiration for the original collection was a 600 year-old elm tree in McQueen’s  garden, and the subsequent story he devised about a girl who emerges from inside it.  Fairy tales and eastern froth meet Victorian ballet dancers.  Oh gosh that last one was gorgeous, like a scarlet ibis or some other exotic bird. You can click here and see this complete collection.

Most recently we were held captive by McQueen collaboration with Lady GaGa.  In her 2009 Bad Romance video McQueen created several pairs of staggering heels and a garment so encrusted with sparkles it  recalls  suits of armor. Let’s be devastated together a while……

I gathered other favorites from various collections throughout the years and thought I’d share some of them here.
